Having been in the wedding industry for close to ten years, I’ve had the privilege of working with various wedding cameras and professionals. Their feedback and my own experience have helped me compile this list of the best cameras for weddings in 2023. As a wedding photographer who shoots over 40 weddings a year, I prioritize sensor size, resolution, and autofocus, particularly subject tracking, when considering the ideal camera body.
Sensor size is crucial in wedding photography. Based on my extensive experience, I strongly recommend cameras with full frame sensors. They excel at capturing crisp images with minimal noise in low light conditions, guaranteeing the best image quality for your clients. Some photographers argue that crop sensors are acceptable, but I’ve personally noticed a significant difference in image quality when comparing the two side by side.
Contrary to popular belief, the best cameras for weddings and low light situations aren’t necessarily high megapixel cameras. Higher megapixel counts translate to larger file sizes, which can be taxing during post-processing. Unless you’re willing to invest in a high-speed computer or endure longer import and export times, I suggest aiming for a sensor size around 20-30 MP. This resolution ensures that clients can print images up to 40″ x 60″ without any noticeable pixelation.
Let’s briefly touch on low light performance. Lower pixel count cameras outperform higher resolution cameras in low light conditions due to their larger pixel surface area. The larger surface area allows more light to be processed, resulting in clearer images with reduced noise. It’s a little-known fact but an important one when considering camera options.
Now, let’s talk about subject tracking. As someone who was initially skeptical about new technology, I was slow to switch to mirrorless cameras. However, after trying the Nikon Z6 at a wedding, I was blown away by its subject tracking capabilities, particularly its eye tracking technology. If you’re still using a DSLR, I highly recommend transitioning to mirrorless for this revolutionary feature, as it significantly improves the quality of images for your clients.
Now that we know the important factors to consider in wedding cameras, let’s discuss the best options for each brand.
For those who own Nikon lenses or are planning to invest in a Nikon camera, the Nikon Z6 II is the hands-down best choice. With its perfect resolution and exceptional low light performance, it offers everything you need for wedding photography.
If you’re interested in professional video work or already have Sony equipment, the Sony A7IV is an excellent camera to consider. Although other models are available, such as the Sony A7RV, which boasts additional features, expending a higher budget solely for wedding photography may not be necessary. The A7IV is perfectly suited for stills.
Canon photographers should strongly consider the Canon EOS R6 for weddings. This camera performs exceptionally well, and while the Canon EOS R5 offers a higher resolution, I don’t personally believe it justifies the higher price tag for wedding photography.
Lastly, if you’re determined to use a Fuji camera, the Fuji X-T4 is an option worth considering. However, I must note that Fuji cameras, being crop sensors, may not be the optimal choice for wedding photography. Preferably, choose one of the top three brands mentioned unless you have a specific preference for Fuji.
In conclusion, the camera market for wedding photography offers a range of excellent choices. Each camera mentioned above has the potential to capture stunning images—it ultimately comes down to the skill of the photographer holding the camera. Remember, there’s no wrong choice.
